Child Safe

Our members’ welfare

A safe, inclusive club

We are committed to the protection, welfare and wellbeing of all our members, and to a safe, fun and enjoyable environment as outlined in the SLSA Member Protection Policy. Every member is treated with respect and dignity and protected from discrimination, harassment and abuse, regardless of gender, age, ability or nationality.

Members are covered by Workers Compensation (SLSNSW) for patrolling, club activities and competition. Complaints are resolved using the SLSA Complaints Resolution Policy. You can also read the SLSA Inclusion and Diversity Statement.

Child Safe

Member protection and child safety

We provide a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment for children through the SLSA Childsafe Program.

Our commitment

The program recognises the importance of protecting young people under 18 from abuse, harm and exploitation. It is everyone’s responsibility to treat children and young members respectfully and within Australia’s child protection laws.

Resources, webinars and online training are available to every member. Please read our Child Safe Handbook.

Required training

All members who work with children and young people must complete the Surf Life Saving Safeguarding Children and Young People Awareness Course.

Log in to the Members Hub first so your completion is recorded. Find the course under Home > Applications > eLearning > Course Categories > Safety and Wellbeing > SLS Child Safe Awareness.

We also encourage everyone to complete the Play by the Rules course, which provides a certificate.

Working With Children Check

All members in child-related roles, including coaches, surf officials, age managers and trainers, must hold a current WWCC, without exception. See the NSW Working With Children Check guidelines.

Apply for a WWCC, then email your approved number to our Club Secretary.

Speak up

Reporting guidelines

Every member has a responsibility to speak up if they see or become aware of something inappropriate. Contact the club immediately or use the SLSA Reporting System to report child safe matters, complaints or grievances.

All reports are treated in confidence and with the utmost respect for everyone involved.
