A few words from the President

Club President

Yet another supercharged couple of weeks! Nippers is now at capacity with 1,400 registered, and we have closed it to new memberships. Our extra water safety has been well received, with our drone (kindly sponsored by Patrick Terminals) overhead and one, if not two, IRBs shadowing the kids in the water. Well done to all the Age Managers, Lifesavers, Water Safety and beach crews for pulling it off.

Most of our Lifesavers have returned, so we can safely support our community (thanks everyone). We’ve run a number of Nipper age group resus courses and started Bronze, IRB Crew and Driver courses.

On the competition side, we hosted Beach Stormers on our home ground, bringing together some of the best sand competitors in Australia, and travelled to the Wanda, Forster and Bonny Hills carnivals. On the weekend of 31 October, a Patrol Team took the club bus down to Corrimal Surf Club to support their Nippers and community, and once again did our club proud.

Off the beach, Andrew McCabe pulled off a fantastic Friday Golf Day at Royal Randwick Golf Course, a highly successful fundraiser for the club, and our Nipper parents have kept everyone fed with the Sunday BBQ. Thank you to everyone who gives their time to make all this happen.

Competition

We are hosting the annual South Maroubra U8 Carnival and Round 2 of the Sydney Branch Carnival on Saturday 14 November. It is always an amazing day, with the spectacle of the surf boats on our beach and our U8s at their first carnival. As carnivals go it’s a short one, but we need your help to make it a success.

Introducing our Junior Club Committee

At South Maroubra, we believe our young members are not just the future of our club, they’re an important part of it right now. That’s why we’re proud to have a dedicated Junior Committee, made up of passionate young members who represent the voices, ideas and interests of our youth.

The Junior Committee gives young members the chance to develop leadership skills, contribute to club activities and help shape initiatives that make our club an even better place for everyone. From helping with events and fundraising to sharing new ideas and building connections across age groups, these young leaders are already making a valuable contribution to club life.

Over the coming months you’ll see more of our Junior Committee around the club and in Blu-ing as they take on projects, support events and grow as the next generation of surf lifesaving leaders. Please join us in congratulating them on their appointment and supporting them throughout the season.

Get ready for an action-packed morning of fun, competition and beach racing as South Maroubra SLSC hosts our annual U8 Carnival on Saturday 14 November. Competitors will take on sprints, flags, wade and a long distance run, with prizes for 1st to 5th place. Registration opens at 7.30am for an 8.30am start.

A huge thank you to our sponsors Engine, Funday Natural Sweets, Zippy Surf Craft, Ohana Ocean Athletics and Okanui for supporting this fantastic event. One lucky overall points champion, boy or girl, will take home a brand new Zippy foamie. Entry is $22.50, or $27.50 on the day.

This is always one of the highlights of the Nippers season, with plenty of racing, cheering and smiles on the beach. We can’t wait to welcome competitors from across Sydney for another great day at South Maroubra. Enter via LiveHeats https://liveheats.com/events/579956 and get ready for some fun.

Maroubra Fun Run and Oktoberfest

The Maroubra Fun Run and Oktoberfest, run with the Maroubra Chamber of Commerce, was another wonderful and successful event. A record number of runners set off on the 4km and 8km loops (a little later than planned). We also christened the new IRB and motor, generously donated by Clovelly Community Bank.

Member recognition

Congratulations to our members who were nominated for the prestigious Randwick City Council Annual Sports Awards.

Our nominees Christopher Kondilios and Olivia Philp were both outstanding nominees for the Bradley Matthews Memorial Award. Huge congratulations to Olivia for taking out the award. It was a fitting end to an outstanding year for Olivia, with brilliant achievements including Branch, State and Aussie Champion in the Champion Lifesaver event. Olivia now joins a very elite group of recipients of this award.

Congratulations to Daniel Driscoll on the Youth Disability Award for Sporting Excellence. Daniel had a great year of achievements and was very humbled to receive this honour.

Congratulations also to our super sand coach Andy Newrick, who received the Community Coach Award in recognition of a truly outstanding contribution as a coach, with results that exceeded our expectations. How lucky our members are to have such a great coach.
