October 11th saw the start of the 2020 nippers’ season at South Maroubra.
This year the pre-season preparations have focused on the safety of our members with the Covid pandemic still hanging over us. Split start times, Covid safety plans, marshalls, social distancing and hand sanitising are just some of the requirements this season and all the volunteers that help put on nippers each week have been incredible in making this happen. The first two weekends ran very smoothly with our nippers heading straight to their zones and learning the new skills from the surf education syllabus. Each age group is getting plenty of water time with many proficiencies completed. One of the limitations this year is that if the beach is closed due to large surf, we must cancel nippers for that day as per our Covid safety plan. Where previously we could utilise the clubhouse or take groups to the lifeguard tower, with the current restrictions these options are no longer viable. With the additional requirements this year we need extra people to jump in and help out. The only people allowed into the zones are those that have a current Bronze Medallion or Age Manager awards. The AM award is available online through the portal https://sls.com.au/role/age-manager/ Holding this award will provide support to your Age Manager and improve the delivery of the program to the nippers. Interviews for the South Maroubra Junior Club Captain’s positions will be held this week with a very strong list of candidates from the Under 14 age group. The position is a great opportunity for these young lifesavers to provide support and leadership to all the nippers at South Maroubra. I wish the best of luck to all the candidates. The start to this season has certainly being an interesting one but with the adaptability and enthusiasm of the whole team at South Maroubra Surf Club it is shaping up to be another great one. A big congratulations for the nippers that graduated with their SRC in September. They started in February and had to wait a few months before being able to finish it off. A big thanks to the education team for holding some long refresher weekend sessions before putting the students to the test. A fresh bunch of Under 14’s have started the SRC course last week so we wish them luck. Keep an eye out for our SRC’s selling meat tray raffle tickets each week, with fund-raising opportunities limited this year, not only could you win dinner for the family, you are helping raise valuable funds for the Nipper section of the club. See you at the beach. Greg Turton Director of Youth Development Sunday November 1, South Maroubra recognised and celebrated 40 Years of Women in Surf Lifesaving and the contribution made by female members past and present to our great Club. It was pleasing to see so many in attendance on what was such a winter’s day. Sitting in the Club’s Heritage Room and BK Lounge surrounded by our memorabilia and history, we celebrated and recognised our many trailblazing female members who have contributed to the success of our Club over the past 4 decades. It was an absolute privilege to be part of this celebration alongside trail blazers including Patricia Beazley, Kathy Mazzeri, Renee Dever, Yvette Rutherford, Kim Rutherford, Samantha O’Brien, Fiona Thompson and so many more. So many amazing females have contributed to our club over the past 40 years, we are indeed so fortunate. Committee members from season 1980/81 were present and shared some wonderful words of the decision and the impact the introduction of females to our club as full members was back in 1980. Our first female member from 1980, Bronwyn Roberts who now resides in England and was one of our first 3 females to gain the Bronze Medallion award in 1980 sent a message to share on the day which is included below;- I feel very privileged to be called a ‘trail blazer’ but in reality all I wanted to do was follow my male club mates to the senior surf club having been left behind for 2 years in the nippers or nipperettes as we were called at the time. I remember the President at the time telling my dad he was not surprised to see I was the first female to join South Maroubra. He went on to say that they chose the wonderful Bernie Kelly to be our instructor as they knew the importance of making sure the first female bronze medallion squad were well trained and passed! We took it very serious and were not about to let anyone down, hence we became part of the first females in NSW to gain the Bronze Medallion and patrol. I remember being very proud to finally be an active member and remained active for over 10 years with South Maroubra. My Message to present and future female members of South Maroubra. You should be extremely proud to be part of a club that didn’t just allow females to join the club to simply comply with government legislation, but embraced, encouraged, nurtured and most importantly treated us as equals. They had the foresight to see that the future was and still is equal opportunity for all. Bronwyn Roberts Thank you to all who attended, including Mayor Danny Said RCC, Councillor Alex Luxford, our Life Members, Peter Agnew - President SLSS, Elissa Hancock - Director of Administration SLSS, members past, present and their families. To all our females - keep on keeping on, you do amazing stuff and your contribution on and off the beach alongside our male members delivering lifesaving services to the community is commendable. You can view the slide show by clicking here. Our Facebook page has a few photos from the afternoon. Let's take a moment to review some of them and what's also coming up!
See you at our Social Sundays Paul ‘Stretch’ Fownes AMP OAM Community is important to us at South Maroubra SLSC, and as a volunteer organisation we rely on community, sponsors and grants to purchase and look after our Lifesaving equipment. Like the donation recent made by Healthfix Health Club in North Sydney.
A recent surplus of high-quality rubber gym flooring at Healthfix when setting up their new Health Club, turned into a donation to our IRB section in order to protect our boats and motors as their being serviced. If you’re looking for some great health professionals we can’t recommend Health Fix enough! You should have by now received an email enrolling you in the online portion of the Bronze Medallion or SRC Skills Maintenance (Proficiency). This season in order to simplify Skills Maintenance in light of COVID 19, and limit the amount of time we need to spend at the club updating your skills, SLSA has created the online modules. In order to complete the online portion you need log in to your online Members Area account at https://members.sls.com.au/. If you do not have an online account click the link in the yellow box on the members area page, and create an account following the instructions provided. The email sent to you by SLSA will have link to the online Skills Maintenance module. If you have any issues with accessing the modules please contact us on the email at the end of this article. NOTE: Completion of the online module is MANDATORY in order to be proficient for the new season. The practical parts of Skills Maintenance (r-s-r and rescues) will be conducted on patrol this season. A trainer/endorsed delegate will attend one of your first patrols for the season to complete the practical components of the Bronze Medallion, SRC and ARTC awards (for the relevant awards you have). For non-patrolling Members (Water Safety and Long services competitors) We have booked in 2 dates for members who are on the water safety patrol, or those who are long service and compete but do not patrol. Saturday 24 October ARTC 9am - meet in Heritage room Bronze Medallion/SRC 10am - meet grass area beach side of the club Saturday 19 December ARTC 8am - meet in Heritage room Bronze Medallion/SRC 9am - meet grass area beach side of the club NOTE: In order to ensure we can adhere to social distancing with the swims and rescues we will be taking groups to the beach in 15min intervals in groups of 10. IRB Drivers and Crew IRB Drivers have been contacted by the IRB Coordinator for those sessons. IRBC will also be signed off based on patrol proficiency. If you’re having any issues with the members area or completing your skills maintenance online module please get in touch with us at [email protected] and we'll be able to assist. As advised in our last Blu-ing we will be dedicating Sunday Social 1 November 2020 from 12 noon, Heritage Room - to recognise and celebrate 40 Years of Women in SLS and especially our female members past and present.
We extend an invitation to members to join us on this day and especially reach out to the many female trail blazing members who have been part of the last 40 years of Women in SLS of our Club. Please join us on the day for an informal social get together - bar will be open at club prices - and as mentioned we will be sharing with you all a PPT presentation of photos recognising females from within the club. Any more photos for inclusion can be emailed to me at [email protected] I would love to get some more so we can cover off on the 4 decades of contribution. Whilst there is no formalities for the day, we would envisage a short welcome to all at approximately 1.00 pm before presenting the slide show of photos and would love to have as many of our females past and present at the club on the day. I am still keen to contact our first 3 female Bronze Medallion awardees - Helen Veale, Aileen Wilson, Bronwyn Roberts to invite them to join us on this day. If any member has any contact details for these past members or their family could you please please let me know [email protected]. I will be reaching out via face book also to seek contact with these 3 ladies. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday 1 November from 12 noon Well folks, the 2020-21 surf patrol season is here, we held our first patrols over this past weekend; with Nippers kicking off in less than a month.

A few updates for your information and consideration: General Club Covid Updates! As you would have seen the many emails, photos and posters around the club, we have been managing the changing environment of Covid. We are now looking for a new Club Covid Coordinator, someone who can help guide us through what I hope will be an improving and final Covid period. The job entails keeping abreast of changing rules and modifying our activities to reflect these changes. If you are available and keen to support us in this important role, please nominate by emailing the office. What’s our current Club Covid status? We are Covid Safe and are open for business with gym, training rooms, storage facilities, toilets; all functioning, albeit with some restrictions. Remember we have the Heritage and BK Bar available for hire (within Covid restrictions). Club Gymnasium hase reopen, however with limitations to adhere to the required 1.5m separation. Att Gym Members! Please be mindful of our property. When attending the gym, ensure you clean after yourself, equipment is to be wiped after use, ensure you use a towel at all times, if your shoes are dirty, either clean them before coming in or take them off. Do the right thing! Club change-rooms have reopen at the start of the season however will have limitations of three occupants within the changeroom areas at any one time maintaining 1.5m separation. Helping our membership! Due to Covid, the club has engaged an additional office staff member to help with administrative support, supporting our office manager with the increased influx of membership enquiries, junior member’s processing of active kids vouchers (our first year of accepting them), apparel sales, and other related activities. Our aim is also to limit crowding in the office. All members can now visit or call the office Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays from 9am to 3pm. Sundays during the nipper season (8am to 12pm). BK Bar and Heritage Room Yes, Covid rules will apply, so you will see changes; but it’s important the social aspect of the club continues. The bar will require customers to register and be seated indoors or outside. Tables of 10 outside will be available along with bar tables. Children must be seated and will not be able to play in the seated zones. A Covid Marshall will be on-hand to lend a hand with the relevant changes Mick’s kiosk will operate as normal each Sunday within social distancing requirements, and everyone is welcome. Mick and his staff will be offering fresh food and Mick's famous chicken Schnity. Remember the kiosk operates on CASH ONLY. Please be conscious of the no-attendance policy. If you are displaying flu like symptoms or feeling unwell, this will help protect your fellow club members and keep the club operating. Remember that our club is an inclusive and diverse club, we are definitely stronger when more members put their hands up to assist; we do offer many activities and opportunities to our members to participate and be part of, such as being part of our Education team as a certified education instructor; or perhaps join the Competition team, representing our club at senior or junior level, join the Nipper team by becoming an age manager so you can improve the development of our kids and make the experience even better, become a qualified coach, or join a Volunteer work group to assist as bar staff at club events such as Social Sundays, or part of our workforce team or being part of one of our committees. The list is endless, have a think and if you can spare some time, we’d like to hear from you, so please call our office.
