As we enter summer and holiday season I reach out to all patrolling members to help with a volunteer patrol on hot busy days. We can never have too many eyes on the water! If you have some spare time and would like to help out, please volunteer your time to patrol with us. Nicole Cooney Director of Lifesaving SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION
In partnership with RESINC Solar, Clovelly Community Bank and a Community Building Partnership Grant via Michael Daley MP, it is with great excitement that we advise club members of the imminent installation of solar panels on the clubhouse. During the months of December and January RESINC representatives will be down at the club preparing (Dec) and installing (Jan) 108 solar panels on our clubhouse roof. This Solar installation will save the club considerable dollars off our current $2000 per month electricity spend. RESINC is sponsoring our club and covering half of the cost of the solar project and together with a contribution from the Clovelly Community Bank and government Grant the club is able to afford this investment. (Project cost $60,814). Please join the Board in welcoming RESINC and the Clovelly Community Bank to our group of valued club sponsors. We will advise members when the Official welcoming celebration with these new sponsors will take place at the clubhouse in January 2021. TOP CAT CATERING We wish Jenny the owner of Top Cat Catering and Manager of Horizons a speedy recovery after a recent accident. Best wishes to you Jenny. The bar opens at 11am. Live music will be available from midday. Ensure that you listen and action any directions from our Covid Marshall who will be circulating around the bar and surrounds to ensure that we remain Covid-19 Compliant. Merry Christmas and enjoy a safe festive season. Good Bye 2020. Kind regards, Yvette Rutherford Director of Finance I’d like to start by wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Regrettably 2020 will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, in particular Covid, the pandemic that has terribly impacted our normal way of life, including our surf club activities, which I’m sure you’ve all experienced in some way. What is the current club Covid status? At the time of writing our club is still operating under our Safety Plan which relates to all aspects of club operations. The more common rules include the need to always use QR registration when entering the club or any of our storerooms. Manual sign in is available in the absence of Smartphones. Hygiene requirements still apply when entering clubs or storerooms, cleaning of gym equipment before and after use, cleaning of shared equipment such as boards plus our lifesaving equipment and training gear all need to managed in line with respective sectional Covid Plans. We reported via Surfguard that changeroom showers are not available for use yet. Please continue to use public outdoor showers located opposite Mick’s kiosk. Current government updates cane be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates Club Room Hire/Functions/Social Sunday status? We are pleased to advise that the Heritage Room and its BK Lounge are available for hiring purposes, whilst club’s Sunday socials will continue, room hire and socials can now operate under the 2 sqm rule. This brings capacity in both rooms back to 100+ guests, great news for our club. Restrictions still apply in terms of being seated when indoors and consuming alcohol but does not apply when walking indoors without alcohol or standing at tables. Dancing of 50 people is now permitted so we’re almost nearly back to normal . Please consider and promote club hire of the Heritage Room for your and your friends’ private events. Brief summary of what’s happening around the club?
Best wishes again for the festive season, have a great and safe Xmas and a happy new year. Paul 'Stretch' Fownes Club Presidente In a season where we have had no competition available, on the 28th of November, Maroubra SLSC put together an R&R & March Past Carnival which would be our first comp event of the season.
MARCH PAST Our Junior March Past Team with limited preparation managed to win the event with some good team work, although we have plenty to improve on leading in to Branch & the State Championships next year. Special thanks to Georgie Kiernan, who at short notice agreed to march with the team and help us secure 1st Place! She is a natural! R&R We had 8+ teams representing our club compete successfully in the R&R event. These teams were mainly from our U12/U13 age groups. Considering the limited preparation (same as MP), our teams did us proud. We are keen to see more interest from our nippers into R&R, particularly from our younger groups, like our U10/U11s. Looking forward to having more of you involved in R&R, some carnivals are in the horizon, and hopefully (within the restrictions) we will be able to participate, we are also looking forward to the Branch and State Championships. So if you believe you have what it takes and are interested in representing our club, please contact Corrine Henville (our R&R coach) or see me on any Sunday, alternatively. Go South Maroubra!!! George Alexiou MP & R&R Competition Coordinator On the morning of the 28th of November at Dee Why, five competitors from South Maroubra ushered in the dawn of a new era.
For the first time in a number of years, the South Maroubra cap was seen on the start line at an Opens Carnival. It was an impressive sight. Even more impressive were the results that followed. The Sydney Northern Beaches Branch is an extremely competitive environment. Throw in some competition from Cooks Hill and others from the Hunter Branch and you have yourself a red hot field. That was the case today, both metaphorically and literally. The age groups were split into two, Opens and U15. We only had competitors for the U15 age group, most from our u14s group, Kane in the u15s. We’ll fill the older age groups as the seasons progress. Representing you today were Lillie & Sienna in the girls; Kane, Luini and Charlie in the boys. In all, there were 7 races available to each of them. The racing was intense. Over and done within a couple of hours. With the training our team have been doing, this sort of racing suited them down to a T. There were even a few decent sets rolling in to make things interesting. In the girls there was a field of 37 competitors requiring a couple of heats for the board, but straight out finals for the surf race. Sienna posted results of 2nd, 7th, 8th, 6th & 7th in the board races, and 13th & 19th in surf races. Lillie was similarly consistent with her performances today finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th & 4th in the board, 16th & 13th in the surf races. What must be remembered here, and for the boys also, is our team may be giving away up to 18 months in age to those they were racing against. To record these results, our team should be really proud of themselves. The boys posted results that were just as impressive. Kane only participated in the board races today. Considering it was his first carnival since last season's State Championships, I think he surprised himself with his results, recording finishes of 10th, 6th, 13th, 8th & 10th. With a few more sessions & carnivals under his belt, expect to see a lot more top 6 finishes from Kane. Luini, still waiting on the arrival of his new board, recorded finishes of 13th, 16th, 16th , 10th & 16th. It was however in the swim where he excelled with finishes of 11th and 18th out of a field 47 starters. Finally to Charlie. I don’t think there are too many competitors who can read the surf as well as Charlie. Whether it be finding an easy way out to the cans or jagging a wave from nowhere, you can be pretty sure Charlie will be amongst it. He recorded outstanding results of 2nd, 4th, 7th, 7th & 4th in the board race, 8th & 6th in the surf race and 3rd in the dash for cash surf race. He was unlucky not to grab the win in this race. Maybe next time Charlie. In all races today, there was no competitor from any club who won races by any significant distance. Each race was up for grabs right to the end and our competitors were right in the mix for all events. All in all, it was an impressive first up effort from these five competitors at an Opens carnival. I look forward to future events when we need more than one tent on the beach to shade our team. Thanks to Shane and Darren for managing the group. Go South Maroubra!! Marty Kiernan Coaching Coordinator
