It is great to be able to support other clubs in needs. Having recently completed an audit of our equipment in the lead up to Gear Inspection for the 2023/24 season, it was identified that we had a few surplus boards. This arose primarily through the generous donations of our local clubs via the ClubGrants which provides funds for Lifesaving equipment.
Unfortunately not all Surf Clubs are as lucky as us. After a call out to the community, it was identified that Blackhead SLSC near Foster (Mid North Coast) was in desperate need of some new boards to replace the 4 old boards they had. Tony Axford from Soldiers Beach SLSC (Central Cost) facilitated the transportation. Date/Time: TBC (subject to weather conditions)We are looking forward to providing all Active Club Members an opportunity to try all the different craft that are used in competitions. We will be making Surf Boats, IRBs and Skis available for you to come and 'Have a Go' under the supervision of our qualified coaches.
Due to the nature of the day, we need to ensure that conditions are suitable, therefore will advise via Facebook page when the date and time in the coming weeks. Welcome members to the first edition of the Blu-ing Magazine for season 2023/24 and what a season we have in store for you! Excitement plus and we can’t wait to see you all back at the club starting with Surf Patrols, Surf Sport training, Nipper and our Social Sundays which by the way continue to run as I speak!
Thanks to those members that attended the Clubs recent July 30 AGM. Officer bearers are listed on the website for your information but of note is the changing of the guard in our very important Life Saving Department with Nicole Cooney standing down and moving back into the vital position of Education Coordinator and the highly capable Darren Saunders stepping up as Director of Lifesaving. In Blu-ing editions to follow we will be introducing some of our key volunteers and the roles they will be playing throughout the season so please continue to monitor your emails. In this edition we will be providing you with key dates, events and information that you should read starting immediately so please read on! Also contained within this article is the very comprehensive annual report which has already been shared via Social Media and our impressive website! Please, if you’re not on Facebook think about jumping on even if only to follow South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club. Much important and timely information is shared via this platform, we’d hate you to miss out! Patrols With flags going up in just over 6 weeks our Lifesaving Department will be sharing this years patrol roster. Much work goes into this roster so a big thank you to our leadership team in putting this together. Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence On Saturday 26/8, Noah Teitler and Nicole Cooney are in the running for state recognition. We join together wishing them the very best at this prestigious event. Gotcha4Life fundraiser We encourage you to support this fundraising effort by either rowing on one of our 5 erg machines in the Heritage room starting Saturday 9th and running for 24 continuous marathon hours or by donating a few dollars which will go towards mental health. Farewell to John Marks Life Members On Sunday 3rd of September members of the Marks family will be heading to the club with the Ashes of our much loved friend and Life Member John Marks. As per John's wishes, his ashes will be scattered in front of his beloved club in a traditional surf boat ceremony. Details are being finalised but we expect time to be around 12.30pm. After the ceremony family and members will come together to remember John and his long and invaluable association with the Club. You're invited to come on down and say farewell to one of our best! Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Mark the end of the season with our very own South Maroubra Ocean Swim
It’s going to be a celebration as awesome as the swim itself, on Sunday April 23rd
For our annual ocean swim, we’re going all out to ensure a great day for swimmers of all abilities and their sun-loving supporters.
First up? a 500m swim for 9- to 12-year-olds at 8.30am.
We know how many amazing young swimmers we have in this club - so we hope there will be plenty of contenders in these home waters - some battling for line honours, others making memories as they complete their very first ocean swim. Sign them up!
The 1km swim will follow at 9.15am, for anyone aged 13 years and up.
Swimmers will head out near the rockpools, towards the first turning marker. It’s then only short swim north before turning back towards the surf club and the satisfaction of the finish line.
At 9.40am we will commemorate Anzac Day, just before the 2.5km swim at 10am.
Also open to anyone 13 years and over, the 2.5km course heads further along the Malabar Headland before the turning buoy. The next turn is in line with Maroubra SLSC, and swimmers will traverse back towards South Maroubra before catching a wave to the finish. Easy.
We’d like to thank in advance our volunteer base who will be out in force both on land and in the water on IRBs, boards and inshore, setting up a safe swim for all participants. All entry fees directly contribute to the purchase of vital lifesaving equipment.
Prizes are on offer for 1st, 2ndand 3rd prizes in all age categories as well as for elite swimmers, with the main presentation at 12 noon rounding out the formalities.
Of course we’ll have the BBQ firing from dawn, music all day with a live band from 12.30pm. And with massage tents and ice baths provided by Recoverie Coogee it’s clearly a healthy choice to stay around and make a day of it!
So register today to be a part of it: https://bit.ly/RegisterSthBraSwim
Supported generously by again by Maroubra Seals, Randwick City Council, Recoverie Coogee, Engine Swim, Home Estate Agents, Core Mortgage Brokers, Vlad Swim, Switch, Budgy Smuggler, Parisi’s, Delfina and Look Design.
